Music at Central

A Singing Congregation

Music at Central begins with the congregation. At Central there is a strong tradition of energized participation in singing during worship. As part of the building of a unique worship experience, we honor the rich Lutheran tradition of singing hymns with energy, prayerfulness, and heartfelt love of God. Central uses several sung liturgies that reflect both the traditions of the Lutheran church, and contemporary trends in worship.

In addition, lay musicians are encouraged to offer their talents as special musicians during worship, accompanying the choir, playing solos for prelude or offertory, or adding instrumentation to a hymn. There are numerous opportunities to become involved in music at Central.

The Central Choir

choir singingThe choir at Central is a committed group of singers that act as part of the primary musical leadership during services from September till June. The choir rehearses every Sunday at 9:00 AM for one hour. During Advent, the choir prepares for their biggest event of the year, the Advent Choral Vespers, a service of lessons and special music, choral anthems, and solos, which has become a much loved part of the Advent season at Central. The choir is also more active during Holy Week, and may take part in most services that begin with Maundy Thursday, and culminate with Easter. Anyone interested in joining choir is invited to come to a rehearsal and check out what being in the Central Choir is about! The group has a lot of fun, both in rehearsal and in worship, but also works hard to perfect their beautiful sound. The Central Choir is noted for its expressive and polished performances of an eclectic body of sacred literature. The choir’s repertoire ranges from Renaissance to Contemporary, with world music traditions, gospel and traditional Lutheran hymnody sung with equal precision and enthusiasm.

Singing School

choir singingSinging School is a workshop for the building of the singing voice that meets every Sunday morning at 8:30 AM, from September till June. All comers are welcome, you don’t have to be in choir, though most people who come to Singing School tend to be choir members. Vocal exercises specifically designed to build tone, range and flexibility are worked on, and there is some attention to furthering a singer’s music reading abilities as well. Many choir members also use this time for individualized instruction or additional rehearsal time.

Children's Music

children singingChildren at Central are encouraged to be active participants in the musical life of the church. As part of their Sunday School experience, the children at Central sing every week, and a few times a year, share their singing with the congregation during various worship services. The highlighted performance of the year is the annual Christmas Pageant. Rehearsals for this usually begin at the beginning of November, with the pageant on a Sunday right before Christmas. Children are encouraged to audition for solos and speaking roles, and everyone who wants to take part has a fun role to play in the pageant. Costumes and some acting coaching also help make this a fun and exciting part of the church year for the kids at Central!
