The people of Central Lutheran have approved a statement strongly opposing the recent executive orders targeting our immigrant neighbors and those who seek safety in our country as they escape the horror of war. We further pledge to "stand alongside our black and brown neighbors, our LGTBQ siblings, our Muslim sisters and brothers and all those who come to us from other lands against any threat to their safety, and reject any attempt to label them as anything less than beloved children of God. Please join us for Holy Week and Easter at Central Lutheran!
We hope you can join us for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, both wonderful, joyous celebrations of worship. But if you want to experience the journey of Jesus that last week of his life and journey with him to the cross, you will want to join us for all of the Holy Week worship opportunities here at Central Lutheran.
Here is just a reminder of some of what happens at each service in case you are attending one for the first time, or as a reminder of how we as participants of worship participate also in the acts of Jesus that first Holy Week:
Sunday April 9 Palm Sunday with Procession: Join us in the parish hall at 10:45 am for the blessing of palms and procession into the sanctuary. This year we will again be using sustainably harvested ‘eco-palms’ purchased through Lutheran World Relief.
We gather in the parish hall to bless palm branches and march in a celebration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. Palm Sunday service always starts with a celebration. We march into the church sanctuary and lay down our palm branches. Then the tone of the service changes as we read the story of Christ’s passion and death (we hear Mark’s account of the passion on Passion Sunday this year and John’s version on Good Friday).
Thursday April 13: Maundy Thursday Service at 7 pm
“Maundy” comes from the Latin for “commandment.” In this service, we read how Jesus gives us a new commandment – to love one another. He demonstrates that love by washing his disciples’ feet. There is a time at the beginning of the worship service to come to the altar for forgiveness of sins and laying on of hands by the minister, and again near the end of the service to share in communion. At the end of the service, the altar is stripped. Through this ritual we recall that Jesus was abandoned by his followers, stripped of his dignity, and left to face the cross alone.
Friday April 14: Good Friday Service at 7 pm
We read the passion according to John, celebrating Christ’s “victory” from the cross. We pray the ancient Bidding Prayer, offering petitions for the whole world. Finally a large cross is carried in procession through the church as solemn reproaches are sung. Once the cross is placed in the altar area, worshippers may come and kneel at the altar or reverence the cross.
Sunday April 16: Easter Sunday
The high holy day of the Christian calendar! Come, bring your friends and family, and join us in the Feast of the Resurrection!
